Cooking Up Success: DISC’s Neurodivergent Interns Shine in the Kitchen

DISC Supported Interns storyboarded, filmed and edited a pilot series of 4 films plus an introductory film for Total Communication Service CIC’s ‘Speaking Out Being Heard’ project. The project shares #Signalong signs for 4 topics.
Signalong is a sign support system for people with learning disabilities (SEND) which uses keyword signing in English word order. So you speak as you sign. We recommend Signalong rather than Makaton, both are based on British.
ΩSign Language (BSL). The project was funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
The topic covered:
- Feelings and Emotions
- Personal Care and Body Parts
- Food
- Christmas.
The signs were chosen by young people with learning disabilities (SEND) who were volunteering as communication Advocates at the New Bridge Learning Centre in Oldham.

During the project, the interns experienced many aspects of professional filmmaking, including green screen, studio setup, communicating with clients, tracking and planning of projects, continuity across teamwork, storyboarding, screen design, accessibility, closed captions, video editing, brand guidelines, copyright issues, client presentation, risk and issue logs, file naming conventions, version control, the feedback and amend cycle and tracking and allocation of tasks.
