James Case Study

The intern started their time at DISC full of the nerves and excitement you’d expect from any young person changing from high school to college. Their first few weeks consisted of them feeling their way into the curriculum, trying out the different digital skill sets, until they were given a chance to try out videography and video editing; after filming and editing a short video, it created a passion for video which would develop further throughout the year. 

As their  skills grew during the first term, DISC’s tutors thought a professional video project would further develop their videography/ video editing skills. So they were set a video project - DISCOVERING CODING - to capture what a normal day is like for DISC’s software development tutor Thom. Despite finding aspects of the project like recording audio and visuals simultaneously challenging, they managed to produce a final video that was true to their vision for the project, and true to the requirements of the brief. 

As the academic year progressed they had the chance to pick up some more skills by helping out with various projects. Working alongside DISC staff members with industry experience, which they shared with them, they helped build their skills further, while also developing their core skills.

Their next video project was a lot more challenging, and needed them to put everything they’d learnt so far during the academic year into practice. They were given the task to film and edit a promotional video for DISC’s sister organisation SENDCode. They had to deal with a range of challenges which included creating a script for multiple interviews, capturing B - Roll footage, and communicating with various SENDCode staff members to update them on the progress of the video. 

They started the project filled with excitement and ideas on how to properly execute it, and made early progress. But eventually they became overwhelmed by the growing list of things to be done on the project. But the benefit of being in a college like DISC is, there are multiple tutors and strategies in place to resolve challenging situations. Students can draw upon the industry experience of the various staff members, who have the experiences to be able to guide them; this helped them move forward and eventually complete the project.

Near the end of their time at DISC their videography and video editing skills reached the point where they were able to film, edit and submit a professional video, in two days.
