Happy Safer Internet Day
Charlotte Jones.
As one of the governors leading on employer engagement at Digital Independent Specialist College (DISC), it has been incredible to see the commitment across the college to supporting interns and building strong employer relationships. From leadership to staff, everyone observed is clearly focused on ensuring interns gain meaningful, relevant experiences that prepare them for the next step in their careers.
Putting Interns First
DISC prioritises placements that are the right fit for each intern, rather than taking a transactional approach. By working with SMEs and employers who understand and support their interns’ needs, the college ensures placements are relevant, practical, and valuable. This focus on the intern experience is central to developing confidence, resilience, and employability skills.
Engaging Employers and Networks
The college makes strong use of existing networks, including NiON and the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, to connect with employers who are already committed to good employment practices. This helps interns gain meaningful experiences while employers see the benefits of working with well-prepared, motivated interns.
DISC is also exploring ways to broaden opportunities in areas such as software engineering and character design, while continuing to build strength in creative and digital marketing roles. Volunteering is another positive outcome for interns, offering real-world experience and confidence-building.
Evidence of Impact
Some key successes are already visible:
- Sustainable partnerships with employers, focused on long-term engagement rather than one-off placements.
- Interns being placed with the right employers, ensuring experiences are relevant and valuable.
- Clear planning around skills development, including resilience and entrepreneurial thinking for those likely to pursue freelance work.
The college is also developing employer case studies and tracking intern outcomes to provide further insight into the impact of placements. Online networking and non-networking events are being considered to strengthen connections between interns and employers.
Looking Ahead
DISC continues to focus on building trusted partnerships with SMEs, preparing interns for a range of career paths, and using evidence to inform and improve practice. By keeping interns at the centre, engaging with employers strategically, and embedding essential workplace skills, DISC is creating experiences that have a lasting impact.
We are always looking for employers to get involved. Whether through paid work placements or volunteer work experience opportunities, your organisation can make a real difference in helping interns develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
