Become a Mentor
In the fast-evolving world of digital industries, diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords, they are essential components for innovation and growth. One of the most impactful ways to contribute to this dynamic field is by becoming a mentor for neurodiverse individuals. Neurodiversity encompasses a range of neurological variations, including but not limited to autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences.
Becoming a DISC mentor in this context means more than just offering career guidance; it involves fostering an environment where neurodivergent individuals feel valued, understood, and empowered to thrive. Your role as a mentor will be instrumental in helping these individuals navigate the complexities of the digital world, from understanding industry-specific challenges to leveraging their unique strengths effectively.
DISC offers its mentors bespoke training, with regular meetings with DISC staff if required. Digital Advantage, the charity that runs DISC will undertake basic DBS checks for all potential mentors. If you’d like to get involved please drop a line to kirsty.bl@disc.ac.uk and she can let you have more information, discuss the process of onboarding and arrange a real or virtual visit to DISC.

In September 2022 DISC (Digital Independent Specialist College) opened for 16-24yr olds in Manchester City Centre providing the UK’s first digital Supported Internship where work experience is taken in house and completed within the supportive college environment. This is funded by DfE and Local Authority contributions. DISC provides a unique, flexible Alternative Provision, Pre-Internship and Supported Internship to talented young people with SEND keen to develop their creative and digital skills. We are committed to changing the landscape for our interns as current statistics show the unemployment rate for people with ASC in the UK is 71%. We do this by providing learning based on live briefs from industry partners completed in a supportive work environment. Our interns develop a broad range of creative and digital skills which is evidenced in their on-line portfolios. Our wider provision; working with our job coach and industry experts, ensures our interns leave us ready to work with our partner employers.
We are an inclusive employer and consider ourselves a team who really cares for each other. We consider people from all employment backgrounds - we are looking for passion and willingness to care and inspire our interns and colleagues.
